THE BOND MARKET ASKS

The Iran War · Seven Months to the Day · September 28, 2026 · Diesel at $6.53
Iran · editor’s call
NOT TACO
No deal since July 8, and the blockade has held since July 14. Strikes come and go: an attack called off Aug 1, strikes again Sept 1. The editor expects him to keep holding.
The TACO to watch
Diesel export ban
Floated Sept 22. Walked back Sept 23. “Very seriously” again Sept 27.
Seven AI models, fully briefed
Iran: a murky pause. Diesel: no ban.
Their likeliest outcomes. Once they had the full picture, their odds of a clean Iran fold fell from 44% to 28%. A reading of the models, not a forecast.

The TACO to WatchOn September 22 Trump said, “I’ve said let’s not send out the diesel. We make a lot of diesel,” and promised a decision “fast, one way or the other.” The next day Energy Secretary Chris Wright recast it as getting “more diesel into the United States,” and a White House official denied a report of a 90-day ban. Goldman Sachs warned a ban could push gasoline prices up; the Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable wrote to him against it; Sen. John Cornyn called it “a gimmick.” Sens. Chuck Grassley and John Thune are for it. On September 27 he said he’s looking at it “very seriously.” The test, by October 28: a signed ban is NOT TACO, a partial or temporary one is PARTIAL, and nothing signed is TACO.
Act II — The Deal He Signed
June 17
VERSAILLES · 60 DAYS · 10-YEAR 4.49% · BRENT $80
The FoldDuring a dinner with Emmanuel Macron at Versailles, Trump signs the Islamabad Memorandum with Iran: a 60-day suspension of hostilities and a framework for permanent peace. The US agrees to end its naval blockade within 30 days and immediately waives sanctions on Iran’s oil exports. Subject to a final deal, it would add a private investment fund of at least $300 billion and release frozen Iranian assets. He says the deal averts a “worldwide depression.” The biggest TACO of the war.
Act III — The Deal He Tore Up
21 days
JUNE 17 → JULY 8 · “OVER” · 80 TARGETS
JulyIranian forces fire on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and set a Qatari LNG tanker ablaze. The US strikes 80 targets across Iran, and on July 8 Trump declares the agreement “over.” Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says it hit 85 US military sites in return. The US withdraws its sanctions waivers, and the naval blockade resumes on July 14. On July 17 an Iranian drone and missile attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan leaves three US service members dead: Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan and Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad. When the Houthis declare a blockade of Saudi shipping, oil goes back above $100. NOT TACO.
Act IV — Two Straits
$130.80
BRENT SPOT · SEPT 15 · HORMUZ AND BAB AL-MANDAB
SeptemberThe memorandum’s 60-day clock runs out in a quiet August, with Hormuz still disrupted. In early September the US and Iran start trading attacks again. The Houthis take the Hanish Islands, Perim Island and the port of Mokha, and with them the Bab al-Mandab strait, the Red Sea’s southern gate. Brent spot hits $130.80 on September 15. On September 22, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff hold mediated talks with Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, at the UN. On September 26, Trump calls Iran’s seven-day plan not “acceptable.” A day later he says Iran “overplayed their hand” and that he still expects talks this week. On September 28 Axios reports he’s willing to offer sanctions relief for nuclear concessions, and he calls the story a “HOAX”: “I offered them NOTHING!”

September 28The 10-year Treasury yield touches 5.27%, its highest since June 2007. It closed at 5.18% on September 24, the highest close since July 2007; a close above 5.26% would be the highest since 2002. The 30-year is at its highest since 2004, and Japan’s 10-year at its highest since 1996. Traders put the odds of a Fed rate hike at 65% for October and 94% by December. On July 31 the US joined Japan in a rare intervention to prop up the yen; on August 19 Treasury doubled its buybacks of long bonds, and yields were back up within a day. In April 2025 a bond selloff did move him: on April 9 he paused the Liberation Day tariffs because people were getting “yippy.” “We have entered the upside down.” — @DanielleFong
Act VI — What the Models Say
44% → 28%
THE SAME SEVEN MODELS’ ODDS OF A CLEAN IRAN FOLD · BARE FACT SHEET → FULL BRIEFING
The CouncilWe asked the same models twice. Given only a news timeline, they leaned toward a fold on Iran, and eight of nine named a 10-year yield level as the trigger. Then we gave them what we had found, with sources: Bloomberg’s reporting on the Pentagon review of the Minab school strike, the FBI notes held back from the Epstein files, the New Mexico inquiry into Epstein’s Zorro ranch that federal prosecutors halted in 2019, the federal ban on Anthropic that a judge called retaliation, and who gains from the war. We added tripwires that cut both ways and the editor’s theses, marked as claims to test. Seven of the nine answered; Qwen and GLM timed out. Their odds of a clean fold fell from 44% to 28%, and a murky partial pause became the likeliest outcome, at 39%. All seven discounted the April 2025 bond-market pattern, and five pointed to fuel prices before the midterms. On diesel, five of seven expect no ban. It is still a reading of the models, not a forecast. Editor’s call: NOT TACO on Iran.

Every TACO event hits markets like a delta function, and each asset rings like a different oscillator. This is the March 26 event from Issue #1, the day he extended his pause on striking Iran’s power plants to April 6. Parametric fits from real 1-minute IBKR data.

// The Catalog

The Trump II record, rebuilt for this issue: 35 events. Several Issue #2 rows had the wrong date or details (the 25% car tariff was signed in March 2025, not 2026; the May 2025 EU delay followed a call with Ursula von der Leyen, not Emmanuel Macron), so every row was checked again, a few that didn’t hold up were dropped, and the old “peak move” columns were replaced with the 10-year yield and Brent spot on each date, from FRED. NEUTRAL means there was no clean test: the other side gave in first, or the signal was denied. The two biggest folds: April 9, 2025 came after the S&P 500 fell 12% in four sessions and the 10-year jumped a third of a point; April 7, 2026 came with Brent at $138.

How this was run. Nine models, one model per call, through OpenRouter via the fusion relay; none could search the web. Bare run (Sept 28, about 6:25–6:45 p.m. ET): a one-page timeline of the war, the markets and the Axios story with Trump’s denial. All nine answered, and they leaned TACO on Iran. Briefed run (Sept 29, about 10:30–10:55 a.m. PT): the same timeline, the diesel facts, and our working notes from a long session with the editor. The notes held six sourced anchors, which the models cite as D1 to D6: D1 the Minab school strike, D2 the FBI notes held back from the Epstein files, D3 the Zorro ranch inquiry, D4 the Anthropic ban, D5 who gains from the war, D6 the Treasury yield record. Their main sources: Bloomberg’s reporting on the Pentagon review and the UN fact-finding mission (Minab); NPR and the Post and Courier (the FBI notes); the Albuquerque Journal (Zorro); a federal judge’s March 26 ruling (Anthropic); FRED (yields). The notes also held tripwires that cut both ways, a record of how our own numbers had swung, and the editor’s theses, marked as claims to test. Her own calls were withheld so the models couldn’t just follow the room. Seven answered; Qwen and GLM timed out twice on the longer briefing. The numbers. Each model’s stated confidence goes to its pick, and the rest is split evenly between the other two outcomes. The needle is the NOT TACO share plus half the PARTIAL share, averaged over the seven models that answered both runs. The relay returns text only, so the names are the models we asked for: DeepSeek and Kimi signed as Claude, and Gemini as GPT-4o. An earlier bare run on a fact sheet with wrong July dates was caught by an independent fact-check and thrown out. Claude Opus 5.5 wrote both fact sheets, the briefing and this page; a separate Opus 5.5 call sat on the council.

// Where They Split

Issue #1: unanimous NOT TACO. Issue #2: the council split by domain. Issue #3: the full picture changed how they read his denial. On the bare timeline, six of nine called “I offered them NOTHING” cover for a deal. Briefed, two of seven did, and four said the denial boxes him in.

HOLDING
Iran, force — The blockade has been back since July 14. Attacks traded again since early September.
Iran, terms — Rejected the seven-day plan on September 26. On September 28: “I offered them NOTHING!”
FOLDING
Trade — A bigger beef quota (September 1). China “30-for-30” lists for possible tariff cuts (September 28).
Iran, money — Axios: sanctions relief and frozen funds on the table for nuclear concessions. Trump calls it a “HOAX.”
“Record fuel prices pull toward relief, but a failed June deal and a same-day denial make an Iran fold unlikely soon.” — Grok 4.7, briefed
